Sofala – Mozambique (Decertified)
The Sofala Community Carbon project was an innovative sustainability project working with forest communities in the buffer zones of Gorongosa and Marromeu National Parks in central Mozambique that improved rural livelihoods, habitat restoration, forest management and conservation of biodiversity.
The project enabled individuals and companies to effectively invest in new forests and agroforestry. By becoming trained crop farmers, local people contributed significantly to their own environments whilst securing regular income and stable, sustainable food supplies. The revival of agroforestry among impoverished communities generated crops that enriched rather than exhausted their fragile forest soils.

Decertification notice
This project is no longer compliant with PV Climate’s stringent set of monitoring, reporting, and verification procedures, and is therefore no longer certified. This status took effect on 13th October 2015. The project was given reasonable opportunities to realign with the Standard but was unable to resolve outstanding issues or provide an acceptable remediation plan within the required six-month timeframe.
In this instance, the project was decertified due to financial difficulties. For more information, please see the published 2015 information note.. As a result, the project’s account is closed on the PV Climate Registry, and all relevant PVCs are marked as “not delivered”. To maintain the integrity of the carbon benefits, any PVCs previously generated will be subject to ongoing monitoring for reversals, or retired from the Risk Buffer.
