Rehabilitation of the Sahel (AGED) – Burkina Faso (Decertified)
Working with indigenous communities, the project aimed to reverse degradation and foster sustainable land management of pastures in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso.
Facilitating natural rehabilitation of degraded pastures involved working with communities to identify and demarcate community pasture areas and the direct seeding of naturalized tree, shrub and herbaceous species. Based on the new Rural Land Tenure Law, enabling legal recognition of rights legitimated by customary rules and practices, local land charters were defined. These local land charters allowed capacity-building of communities to develop and implement appropriate controls of pasture use.
Decertification notice
This project is no longer compliant with PV Climate’s stringent set of monitoring, reporting, and verification procedures, and is therefore no longer certified. This status took effect on 20th February 2025. The project was given reasonable opportunities to realign with the Standard but was unable to resolve outstanding issues or provide an acceptable remediation plan within the required six-month timeframe.
In this instance, the project was decertified due to the current security challenges in the affected regions of Northern Burkina Faso which have rendered the project sites inaccessible. This situation, which is beyond control of the project, makes it impossible to conduct important monitoring activities that are necessary to comply with the PV Climate Standard. As a result, the project’s account is closed on the PV Climate Registry, and all relevant PVCs are marked as “not delivered”. To maintain the integrity of the carbon benefits, any PVCs previously generated will be subject to ongoing monitoring for reversals, or retired from the Risk Buffer.
