Projects
High-integrity, locally-led
Delivering measurable & meaningful impact
In 1994 an idea was born in Chiapas, Mexico.
Through developing ‘plan vivos’ (living plans) smallholder communities received compensation for planting trees. This became the Scolel’te project, which generated the world’s first credits on the voluntary carbon market.
Plan Vivo grew from this seed. Three decades on, dozens of Plan Vivo projects around the world have followed — led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities focused on delivering meaningful and measurable benefits for people and planet. Together, these projects show what long-term, community-led action can achieve.
Carbon Projects
Across Africa, Latin America, and the Asia–Pacific, Plan Vivo carbon projects are taking action against climate change, while supporting resilient, lasting benefits for local communities.
From blue carbon projects along Kenya’s coastline to grassland restoration in Mongolia, these community-led initiatives create fairer, more resilient futures and provide buyers and funders access to credible, high-integrity climate solutions.

Carbon projects
Alongside Plan Vivo’s certified carbon projects, there are multiple projects currently seeking certification. Once certified, these projects can issue and sell Plan Vivo Certificates, using the income to invest back into local initiatives and to sustain and expand their crucial work.
Biodiversity Projects
Spanning four continents, Plan Vivo's biodiversity projects demonstrate what can be achieved when local people are at the centre of nature restoration and conservation.
From restoring seascapes in the UK to protecting elephants in Zimbabwe and Botswana. From degraded farmland in the mountains of Portugal, to a wildlife corridor in Uganda. Plan Vivo provides the tools, guidance and support for local teams to track and measure biodiversity impact with confidence, giving buyers and funders the opportunity to invest in nature restoration and conservation that is truly community-led.
