Hieu Commune – Vietnam (Decertified)

The Hieu Commune REDD+ project was Vietnam’s first REDD+ project, protecting forested areas in three M’nam ethnic minority villages within Kon Tum Province.

This project was decertified on 1st March 2025. Find out more

Located in the south-eastern Annamite Mountains, an area recognised as a global biodiversity priority, and on the tri-border with Laos and Cambodia, Kon Plong forest is the only habitat corridor left in this landscape, maintaining vital connectivity. This project protected a total of 1,238 hectares of the Kong Plong forest within the customary boundaries of three communities of the Hieu Commune. 35 species included in Vietnam’s Redbook, the IUCN Red List and/or the CITES List have been recorded within the Hieu Commune, including the northern yellow-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus annamensis, EN) and the grey-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix cinerea, CR).

Project activities aimed to combat the issues of slash and burn agriculture for cassava crops and illegal logging, while facilitating the development of sustainable livelihood improvements.

Decertification notice

This project is no longer compliant with PV Climate’s stringent set of monitoring, reporting, and verification procedures, and is therefore no longer certified. This status took effect on 1st March 2025. The project was given reasonable opportunities to realign with the Standard but was unable to resolve outstanding issues or provide an acceptable remediation plan within the required six-month timeframe.

In this instance, the project was decertified due to a lack of viability for a robust, high-integrity REDD+ project. As a result, the project’s account is closed on the PV Climate Registry, and all relevant PVCs are marked as “not delivered”. To maintain the integrity of the carbon benefits, any PVCs previously generated will be subject to ongoing monitoring for reversals, or retired from the Risk Buffer.
