Trees of Hope – Malawi

About the project
The Trees of Hope project coordinates community-led efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation through agroforestry and reforestation activities, reducing the local community’s vulnerability to climate change
The Clinton Development Initiative established the Trees of Hope Project in 2007 in the Dowa and Neno districts of Malawi to reverse deforestation, mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, and bolster a self-sustaining marketplace by making tree farming profitable and attractive for smallholder farmers.
The Trees of Hope project helps decrease the community’s vulnerability to climate change by implementing tree-based land use systems, while also providing farmers with increased income from the sale of Plan Vivo certified carbon credits.
Winding down
This project is continuing to meet its monitoring, reporting and verification obligations but is no longer generating new PVCs. The project will continue to operate until it has fulfilled its commitments to all participants, as outlined in all PES agreements signed, and then fulfils its remaining obligations to Plan Vivo with a final verification. During this time, the project is not expected to migrate to the latest version of PV Climate. This is a normal part of the part of the project's lifecycle under PV Climate Version 4 and indicates a successful project coming to an end. The final verification is expected in 2026.
