Hiniduma Bio-Link – Sri Lanka
On this page:
About the project
The Hiniduma Bio-Link Project aims to conserve Sri Lanka’s last remaining rainforests, whilst addressing the pressing issues of rural poverty and climate change in a developing country.
The project establishes a biodiversity corridor between two large remnant, vastly disturbed rainforest patches, Singharaja and Kanneliya, and to conserve buffer zones around the forest edges through reforestation.
The primary aim of this project is to reduce the pressure by local communities in the surrounding areas on the remaining rainforest patches, whilst enhancing the livelihoods of traditional communities living in close proximity to tracts of natural forest where the biodiversity is high, but under imminent threat.
Suspension notice
What is suspension?
PV Climate certification requires a rigorous set of reporting and auditing deadlines that projects must abide by. At times, projects may miss deadlines due to factors that they may or may not be in their control. The suspension process aims to uphold the integrity of PV Climate whilst also be fair to projects experiencing difficulty due to factors outside of their control.
More information about the reporting and auditing deadlines, and the suspension process, can be found in the Procedures Manual.
Suspension reason
The Hiniduma project was validated in 2012 and is still operating under PV Climate V3/2009. Whilst the project has done well keeping up to date with annual reports, it has never been verified due to the financial restrictions created by its small size and the significant cost of external audits. The Plan Vivo Foundation has always appreciated this difficult situation, however due to current procedures and market expectations this project is suspended pending the outcome of the remediation plan.
Suspension start date
6th June 2024Remediation Plan
A remediation plan was submitted by the project and accepted by the Plan Vivo Foundation on the 3rd July 2024. An extension to the remediation plan was submitted by the Project and approved by the Plan Vivo Foundation on the 10th December 2024. Deadline for remediation plan to be completed is 30th April 2025.
