Soils are fundamental pillars of sustainable development. They are essential for food security and provide ecosystem services including carbon storage. Even though soils are managed and owned locally, their degradation is a key global issue, as their functions transcend national boundaries. We urgently need to upscale sustainable soil management.

The First Global Soil Week offers a forum of interactive exchange and dialogue. Stakeholders from science, government, business and civil society will come together to share their land and soil-related experience and expertise, and to develop future plans of action for sustainable land/soil management and governance.

The Plan Vivo Foundation is presenting in the session: “Markets for Soil Organic Carbon: A Feasible Policy Solution for Smallholders?” on Wednesday 21st November.

For more information including registration and programme info visit the First Global Soil Week website.

What
Making agriculture ‘climate-smart’ in developing countries can help improve smallholder livelihoods, green supply chains and tackle climate change challenges (both adaptation and mitigation). But measuring the benefits of climate-smart agriculture, and supporting long-term landscape level programmes is a challenge – for donors, governments, retailers and carbon market professionals.

This launch event provides an exciting and exclusive opportunity to hear about new approaches and tools that can be used to help scale up adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, and link businesses and donors to communities in developing countries through robust and ethical certification standards.

The Plan Vivo Foundation will also be presenting the updated 2012 Plan Vivo Standard for Community Payments for Ecosystem Services Programmes. The updated standard covers a range of community-based land use activities, which can generate quantifiable climate and ecosystem service benefits, and support local livelihood development and ecosystem restoration.

The launch event will include interactive workshop sessions so that stakeholders can better understand how they can work together to support and measure climate-smart agriculture. A detailed agenda will be shared in the coming weeks.

Who
The event is jointly hosted by PwC and the Plan Vivo Foundation with funding support from the Rockefeller Foundation. PwC’s Sustainability and Climate Change (S&CC) practice won Consultancy of the Year at the Business Green Leaders Awards in 2011 and 2012. With a global network of 700 experts and a team of more than 100 specialists in the UK, PwC is a leading advisor on sustainability, climate change and green growth.

The Plan Vivo Foundation is a UK charity established to support rural communities with natural resource management, climate action, ecosystem restoration and livelihood development. The Foundation administers the ‘Plan Vivo Standard’ which is already being used to support over 10,000 rural smallholders and community groups via Payments for Ecosystem Services Programmes.

Why attend
The event provides an opportunity to learn about new technical tools, standards and funding models that could enable a scalable and cost effective approach to support adoption of smallholder climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land use in developing countries. The event also provides an opportunity to meet with a range of stakeholders including:

Agribusinesses and retail and consumer businesses working with smallholders in their supply chains

Donors supporting adoption of climate-smart agriculture amongst smallholder farmers

NGOs, project developers and carbon market investors engaged in agricultural Payment for Ecosystem services and carbon offsetting

Academics researching the benefits of climate-smart agriculture

When
Wednesday 31 October 0830 – 1200

Where
PwC, 7 More London Riverside, London, SE1 2RT

Please let us know whether you are able to join us by Monday 15 October so that we can finalise our catering arrangements (breakfast will be provided). If you have any questions regarding the event please get in touch with Liz Daniels at elizabeth.m.daniels@uk.pwc.com.

a

The Plan Vivo Foundation is very pleased to announce the issuance of the one millionth Plan Vivo Certificate.

This means that plan vivos (land management plans drawn up by rural smallholders and community groups) have been implemented to collectively sequester or reduce over 1,000,000 tonnes of CO2.

This milestone helps to demonstrate that rural communities can participate in the voluntary carbon market, reach scale and generate verifiable carbon benefits. The Plan Vivo System is working for thousands of smallholders and forest-user groups in developing countries, channelling carbon finance effectively to the rural poor.

The Plan Vivo Foundation would like to take this milestone as an opportunity to recognise the input and commitment of all Plan Vivo stakeholders for collectively bringing us to this landmark.

Plan Vivo stakeholders are celebrating this event with a gathering, hosted by the Markit Environmental Registry, in London on the 30th June. If you would like to attend, please contact Elaine Muir: Elaine@planvivofoundation.org

Event details:
