The key goal of the 3rd ARWG meeting is to explore how members’ projects can be developed to encompass a wider range of important environmental and social benefits.  The meeting will examine how emerging projects can evolve into nationally and internationally recognised programmes which receive support in the form of payments for ecosystem services (PES).

The Plan Vivo Foundation has been invited to sit on the panel discussing PES Standards and Certification – how can certification systems better support community PES initiatives? on Wednesday, 9th January.

What to expect?

The updated version continues to have a focus on pro-poor land-use management activities, that take place on smallholder or community-managed land. It incorporates lessons learned since the 2008 version of the standard was released, and codifies updated governance procedures for overseeing projects that have developed over time.

The scope of the standard has been broadened to cover all community-based land management activities, where activities are capable of generating quantifiable climate services and other ecosystem and livelihood benefits. This is with a view to providing a more integrated certification service.

Stakeholder input is essential to the development of Plan Vivo. We look forward to receiving feedback on the updated version and encourage all interested parties to participate in the review process.

Cooperativa Ambio, the Mexican organisation that coordinate the Scolel’Te project (the longest running Plan Vivo project), was shortlisted for the prestigous Equator Prize run by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The Equtor Prize was created to recognise and reward outstanding local initiatives that are working to advance sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities.

Supporting tea smallholders with native species reforestation in Sri Lanka

25th July 2012

The first project in Asia to complete a Plan Vivo validation has been registered, in Sri Lanka. Developed by the Conservation Carbon Company and Rainforest Rescue International, the Hiniduma Biolink Project aims to create a biodiversity corridor between two rainforest patches in Galle district.

The project works with smalholder farmers, mainly tea farmers, in an ambitious reforestation programme using over 90 different tree species. It has already piloted systems with an initial group of 15 farmers and will scale up gradually over the project lifetime, aiming to eventually reforest and restore over 2000ha of deforested and degraded land between World Heritage forest sites at Singharaja and Kanneliya.

Further Plan Vivo validations are also underway in India and Nepal. We are delighted to see the Plan Vivo network developing in Asia and hope experiences generated in these new projects will support the development of more grassroots community climate action over the coming years.

The Society for Ecological Restoration, a not for profit organisation with over 2300 members, actively engaged in ecologically-sensitive management of ecosystems, has endorsed the Plan Vivo Standard and opted to offset its events with Plan Vivo Certificates.

SER is supporting the Scolel’Te programme in Mexico, in collaboration with Blue Green Carbon.

June 2011 | Issuance of one millionth Plan Vivo Certificate

The Plan Vivo Foundation is very pleased to announce the issuance of the one millionth Plan Vivo Certificate.

This means that plan vivos (land management plans drawn up by rural smallholders and community groups) have been implemented to collectively sequester or reduce over 1,000,000 tonnes of CO2.

This milestone helps to demonstrate that rural communities can participate in the voluntary carbon market, reach scale and generate verifiable carbon benefits. The Plan Vivo System is working for thousands of smallholders and forest-user groups in developing countries, channelling carbon finance effectively to the rural poor.

The Plan Vivo Foundation would like to take this milestone as an opportunity to recognise the input and commitment of all Plan Vivo stakeholders for collectively bringing us to this landmark.

The Plan Vivo Foundation has launched its first formalised Technical Advisory Group to support the technical development of the Plan Vivo System and projects.

The Group is composed of a wide range of experts in community-based natural resource management, ecosystem services quantification and monitoring, and the development of rural livelihood programmes. Expertise will be drawn from African, Asian and Latin American experts to ensure the System is practical and applicable in different developing country contexts.

The Group will provide elements of quality control in the application of Plan Vivo System, and contribute to the ongoing  participatory development of the Plan Vivo Standard through providing guidance and technical oversight.

Specific functions are to:

• Peer review technical documents from existing and potential Plan Vivo projects
• Provide recommendations on technical requirements in the Plan Vivo Standard and how they should be applied in practice
• Contribute to the development of tools and methodologies to support Plan Vivo projects

May 2010 | New Plan Vivo project registered in Tanzania

A new Plan Vivo project, called Emiti Nibwo Bulora, has been validated and registered. The project is located in the Kagera district of Tanzania, and is supporting rural smallholders to carry out afforestation and agroforestry activities.

The project will be undertaken by Vi Agroforestry,as part of the wider Lake Victoria Regional Environmental and Sustainable Agricultural Productivity Programme (RESAPP). The programme supports smallholders to learn about and engage in tree planting and other land use management techniques, that are both sustainable and deliver economic and social benefits to small scale farmers and communities.

The project aims to bring 1300 ha under plan vivo management by 2012, delivering 90,000 Plan Vivo Certificates.
